Coming Soon: Mask Mondays!

You know what pisses me off? Seeing tutorials and skin care vids of women with beat faces sparingly applying mask products to their face. As if they are completely unaware that the skin around their brows, mouth and eyes also needs to be tended to. After providing these women with one too many views, I have decided that I will begin a weekly Periscope broadcast featuring myself and some of my fav masks and other products. Those tuning in will be able to ask me health, beauty and wellness questions. So you’ve got a week to download the app and follow. Can’t wait to see you there!

Not into livestreams and such? No problem! I’ll bring the best questions, suggestions and ideas here for your consumption.

Transformation Inspiration

Meet Jenn! She is a fireball of a woman whose charisma and love for life I have always admired. Ever since our paths crossed, I am constantly amazed by the way she puts herself out there and pursues her passions with virtually no fear. I have watched Jenn throughout her amazing lifestyle transformation and look to her as a source of inspiration when making healthy life choices. I hope you can too!
What influenced you to make the decision to transition into a healthier lifestyle? How did your journey begin?
Jenn:What influenced me? I was fat! My health and quality of life were deteriorating. My real journey began with weight loss surgery. After that it was making better food choices and a lot of exercise

What is your favorite way to burn calories?
Jenn:I don’t have a favorite way to burn calories, but most often I run, dance, and lift weights.

Did you try different types of workouts? If so, which one was least effective to you?

Jenn:Um…nah I wouldn’t say I tried different types because to me the only thing that differs a workout is intensity. I think that it’s really all the same, just a matter of execution. Everything I did was pretty effective, i just needed to be consistent

What advice would you have for creating a diet plan that works?

Jenn:I no longer believe in diets. They never worked for me. I believe in making the right choices regarding food and what works for my body. I kno that simple carbs aren’t my friend. So I don’t intake a lot of it. Nor is soda. I have a snacking habit, so I try to snack healthily.

My only advice would be to learn your body and make small adjustments until they become a habit. It’s the only thing that is guaranteed to work long term.

Are there any special apps, gadgets, or workout gurus that keep you motivated and consistent?

Jenn:I love my Fitbit, but I’m looking into apple watch, I like the Nike + app for running.

I follow a few workout gurus like @massyarias and @qui2health among others. I like to follow @ladydork to remind me that I need to stretch. I also follow a fellow wls (weight loss surgery) patient @bodybuildingbrandi she’s so inspiring, especially since we had the same procedure. She motivates me to get off my ass. @qui2health motivates me to keep going in the middle of a workout cuz I vision her and the weights. And I’m like “Jen, ur only lifting a fraction of that. U got this.”

My personal trainer also keeps me focused and going to my post-support group every so often refocuses me

Body Love

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I will share with you a few tips for getting smooth, touchable skin… just in case you find yourself getting rubbed down on this cold winter’s night! I will share my own beauty routine and a few of the products I use to preserve my skin. I dabble with different products but I will only be sharing the ones that I absolutely cannot live without.

As Pharrell put it, exfoliation is the key to great skin! Often times I find that people do not exfoliate their bodies enough. This can leave the skin flaky, dry and slow to accept moisturizers. That’s a huge no for me… which is why exfoliating gloves are a major part of my regimen. I was introduced to them as a child by my grandmother who called them the “Michael Jackson gloves”. They’ve been a staple for me ever since. I love that they can be used dry or wet and are extremely easy to clean. I throw them in with my laundry. They can be found in the beauty aisle at your local drug store. For the best results, gently exfoliate your limbs every day.

People love to debate as to what should come first, cleansing or exfoliating. I think it makes the most sense to eliminate dead skin cells then cleanse the skin. Some body washes/soap brands I especially love are Soaptopia (natural handmade bar soaps & body oils), HEMPZ (natural eco friendly soaps & lotions), and of course Carol’s Daughter’s Almond Cookie Collection (sulfate/paraben free body washes & moisturizers). Try to avoid any heavily scented body products because they throw off the skin’s pH.

This next body care tip may sound weird but after your shower, never dry off! Allowing the body to air dry does remarkable things for the skin and moisturizing process. More than anything, the skin loves water. This means to effectively moisturize the skin, you should first use a product that has a good amount of water in it followed by an oil/oil based product to seal it in. The brands I mentioned before also have pretty amazing lotions and oils. I really love Soaptopia’s Oil Slathers!

I hope you found some helpful tips that will help you be your smoothest, most beautiful self! And even if no one has the pleasure of touching your skin this Valentine’s Day, enjoy!

Birthday Bath House!

You may or may not be aware, but yesterday (Jan 31) was my birthday! In celebration of this, I spent most of my day lounging around King Spa & Fitness butt ass naked with two of my favorite coworkers! We treated ourselves to beauty masks, V-Steams, full body massages, a series of hot baths, steam rooms and much more.

King Spa is a Korean style bathhouse. They are opened 24 hours and have everything you could require during your visit (from toothpaste to a full menu of delicious food). There are coed common areas in the facility where you can lounge, but for the most part, you are required to be nude in the women’s quarters. This was something I enjoyed (not in a sexual way) because there were women of all shapes and sizes who seemed to be comfortable with themselves. It is refreshing to be in a room with women who aren’t ridiculing themselves or speaking about what they need to get cut away. We ran into a woman who was there to celebrate her 89th birthday! She was delighted to see young women who were interested in self care and encouraged us to stick with it so that we would age gracefully.

But what I really wanted to chat with you ladies about was my V-Steam experience! The V-Steam is a vaginal treatment in which you sit over a pot of hot, steaming herbs that help to open pores and extract toxins from within the body through the vaginal canal and sebaceous glands. The girls and I sat over the pot of assorted herbs for 30 minutes wrapped in what looked like a large shower curtain to help the steam lock in and do its job. We were also given a small cup of Mugwort tea. Mugwort also known as (Artemisia vulgaris) is an herb traditionally used in indigenous tribes to help enhance psychic abilities and lucid dreaming. Today, it is used to help with vaginal diseases, menstrual health, and cleansing. It tastes bitter.. especially if you swallow a piece of it by accident as I did.

We all went into the V-Steam with the hopes of clearing up our ingrown hairs and various winter skin concerns.  While some withstood the heat better than others, I was fuxking melting! Sweat was dripping onto the floor when i stood up. I won’t flash you guys my vagina but I will tell you that I see a big difference in my skin. Not only does it look healthier but it feels smoother. Today, I picked up some liquid exfoliate from Aveda to help prevent any further dead skin buildup and preserve these amazing results. I highly recommend this treatment, especially since we are so close to Valentine’s Day and many of us are preparing to give vagina as a gift.

TIP: If your local spa does not offer the V-Steam service or you simply want to be adventurous, I combed the internet to find a few videos of women creating their own herbal mixtures and setups for their at home V-Steams! Enjoy! 🙂

At Home V-Steam Setup : Please do not be grossed out by this one! Most women who steam at home do so by placing a pot in their toilet. the key is finding the perfect sized pot. If you don’t want to use your toilet, some women simply stand/squat over a pot. I recommend using a sheet to wrap around yourself while you do it, no matter what method you choose to use.

At Home V-Steam Herbal Blend : This one is a great video because it really organized. The only part I personally do not recommend is adding an essential oil to your blend. It can be too strong for the vaginal area.
